Fort Huger
Along with Fort Boykin, Drewry's Bluff and the CSS Virginia, Fort Huger was a valuable part of the defense of the James River, the waterway to Richmond. Abandoned since the War Between the States, Fort Huger has recently undergone a multi-million dollar restoration through the determination and hard work of a number of local citizens with a commitment to preserve this important historic site which is scheduled to open to the public in May, 2008.
The 1st Virginia was unexpectedly blessed with an invitation to a private, guided tour of the restored Fort Huger one month prior to its public opening. Thus, we had the opportunity to be the first uniformed contingent to occupy and raise a flag over the fort since 1862.
Fort Huger, its directors and volunteers have our thanks and best wishes for future success in historical education and preservation.
You may see us in the future on a Fort Huger brochure ... or back for another visit.
